Woodpecker

Green Woodpecker (Picus viridis)

This bird lives in woodlands, small copses, farmland and parks. It is often seen on the ground looking for ants and other insects. It excavates a hole in a tree to build a nest where it will lay 5 - 7 eggs which hatch after 17 days. They are very shy birds and best photographs are taken from a hide.

Great Spotted (Dendrocopos major)

This bird is common all over the UK in woodlands and often on garden feeders. The juvenile has a red head. The nests are made by chiseling a hole in the tree where it will lay 4 - 7 eggs which hatch after 20 days.
